The Seattle Aquarium is the ninth largest aquarium in the U.S. by attendance and among the top five paid visitor attractions in the Puget Sound region. Opened in 1977, the Seattle Aquarium was owned and operated by the City of Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation until 2010, when the nonprofit Seattle Aquarium Society assumed its management.

MacDonald Boyd and Associates has ongoing, active engagement with the Aquarium on all levels as it tackles the challenges and opportunities associated with large scale culture change and transformative executive leadership development.

 

1st Security Bank

 

Headquartered in Mountlake Terrace, Washington, 1st Security Bank has been serving customers in King, Kitsap, Pierce and Snohomish counties since 1936.  MBA has worked closely with 1st Security leadership for over 5 years as the bank has navigated a major transition from a credit union to a commercial bank.

Our ongoing relationship includes informing comprehensive changes to the governance structure, redefining Board and executive leadership roles, strategic business planning, executive retreat facilitation, and internal capacity building.

Space Needle Corporation

The Space Needle- Seattle’s iconic landmark- is a privately owned family business governed and managed by the second generation of the Wright family.  MBA worked with the Board of Director’s on general governance issues including strategic business planning, CEO leadership transition, CEO evaluation, meeting effectiveness, and annual retreat design and facilitation.

Foss Waterway

We engaged in a design process that actively involved over 50 educators and experts from throughout Puget Sound through facilitated sessions and surveys. The results helped shape a major facility renovation/ expansion and inform program development for marine and environmental science and maritime education on the Foss Waterway Seaport in Tacoma.

Sellen Construction

Sellen Construction is the largest locally owned commercial construction firm in the Northwest. MBA has worked with the top leaders at Sellen for over two years to guide internal capacity building, conduct long and short-term strategic planning processes, facilitate organizational realignment, and integrate new branding strategies into action across the company.

We continue our work to leverage capacity at the executive level and develop new leadership talent throughout the organization.

REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.)

With over 100 retail stores and annual revenue over $1 billion, REI is one of the nation’s largest and most successful consumer co-ops.  MBA worked with CEO Sally Jewell and several successive board chairs to design and facilitate the board’s annual planning retreats.  MBA also conducted assessment processes to improve board effectiveness.

Capitol Hill Housing

Seattle Public Utilities

MBA has worked with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) since the 1990’s. Our most recent project involved an executive 360 evaluation and feedback process using the MBA individual leadership assessment tool. In addition, the extended leadership team developed a team charter and SPU leadership competencies.

Meridian School

The Meridian School, an independent K-5 school in Seattle, hired MBA to design and facilitate a strategic planning process.  Working with the school’s Board of Directors and Head of School, we designed an inclusive process that engaged faculty, staff, board members, parents, and outside partners.  Planning elements included an oversight committee, planning retreat, school-wide survey, and focus groups involving faculty & staff. The resulting five year strategic plan was put into action in the fall of 2007 with the full support of the entire school community.

Gary Locke, Washington State
Governor & King County Executive

Prior to President Obama appointing him Secretary of Commerce, Gary Locke was the King County Executive and Governor of Washington State.  During his three terms in these two offices Locke relied on MBA’s leadership coaching, strategy, team development, design, and facilitation skills.  MBA provided key organizational development services to Locke’s transition teams and executive teams as well as his broader executive cabinet.

Seattle Public Library

MBA planned and designed an executive team retreat for the Seattle Public Library to help them respond to changing economic realities while maintaining high levels of service and quality community support.

Wave Broadband Employee Survey

MBA has worked closely with the CEO, Executive Team, and Board during several years of rapid growth. Projects have included comprehensive employee surveys for Wave Broadband’s 9 field offices and central operations HQ. Our effective use of the MBA survey tool using the Trust/Task/Team framework has provided insights and direct improvement strategies. We used the survey results with their middle management group and executive team to design company wide improvement strategies. We are looking forward to delivering a future leadership training program throughout Wave.

Seattle Foundation-
Youth Philanthropy Camp

The Seattle Foundation, one of the nation’s largest community foundations, hired MBA to guide the curriculum design process and provide facilitation services for their youth philanthropy camps.  The camps teach middle and high school students the basics of philanthropy and grant making by allowing them to experience the grant making process first hand.  After site visits with local not-for-profits, the group engages in a rigorous evaluation and decision-making process to award a grant to a deserving organization.
